Scripture Study

Sister Barbara Thompson of the Relief Society General Presidency spoke on scripture study and promised as we strive to read the scriptures consistently, our desire to continue to read will increase. At times it seems so difficult to read the scriptures daily. Family, school, work, friends, church callings…the list could go on and on. I have come to learn from personal experience that when I strive to read my scriptures first, my day will always go better and I am blessed with the ability to accomplish those things that I need to.

I decided to read the Book of Mormon this year and just finished the book of Mosiah. I read about Alma the Younger, about his life choices, and his conversion to the gospel. There are so many principles and lessons that I gained from my scripture study today. In Mosiah 27:8-10 it talks about the influence Alma the Younger had on the people. “He led many people to do after the manner of his iniquities…and he became a great hinderment to the prosperity of the church of God…” It’s amazing to me the influence one person can have, whether it be for good or evil. Reading that gives me hope that I can really make a difference in the world. In v. 14-16 an angel of the Lord comes to Alma the Younger and tells him that the Lord has heard the prayers of his father and the people and says, “Go thy way and seek to destroy the church no more, that their prayers may be answered.” I know that if I am in tune with the Spirit that I can be an instrument in the hands of the Lord and answer the prayers of others.

I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that if we strive to read the scriptures daily with open minds and hearts that we can learn the truths that Heavenly Father would want us to know.
